Now it wasn’t just a matter of maybe dealing with a nasty virus by shutting down the system, purging it, and rebuilding it from backup. The threat of losing all of one’s data brought many minds to focus on security more intensively than ever before. Then we saw the rise of ransomware as a real threat for ordinary users. But as those posts documented, optimal security on Win10 still called for a massive number of things to fix, monitor, and avoid. To be sure, Microsoft did eventually achieve an impressive level of security, considering the vast number of people and activities that continued to flourish on that OS. That led, a few years later, to a post - actually, a series of posts - that worked through what turned out to be the nightmare of trying to make Windows 10 secure. Instead, I accepted the need to revert to Windows-world. That was the beginning of the end for my suggestion that desktop Linux could achieve desktop dominance after all, if its developers could focus on making it a haven for disaffected Windows power users. That was my concept of a good operating system (OS) installation.īut then another post from around that time registered my dismay that, actually, Linux might not turn into Windows as easily as I hoped. I wanted my Linux system to be able to do everything that I could do in Windows. A later post applies these decisions to a more recent Ubuntu installation.įive years ago, I wrote a post seeking Linux counterparts for 95 Windows programs that I felt I really needed. This post discusses key decisions underlying installation of a minimal Ubuntu system.
